Founded in 1980, United Microelectronics is the world's third-largest dedicated chip foundry, with 5% market share in 2024 after TSMC and SMIC. UMC's headquarters are in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and it operates 12 fabs in Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan and Singapore, with additional sales offices in Europe, the US, and South Korea. BioNTech is a Germany-based biotechnology company that focuses on developing cancer therapeutics, including individualized immunotherapy, as well as vaccines for infectious diseases, including covid. The company's oncology pipeline contains several classes of drugs, including mRNA-based drugs to encode antigens and neoantigens; monospecific and bispecific antibodies; and antibody-drug conjugates, or ADCs. Comirnaty, its Pfizer-partnered covid vaccine, is its first commercialized product.
