While MiniMed recently became an independent company again, it began in the 1980s as an upstart pioneer in developing and commercializing insulin pump therapy. Medtronic acquired MiniMed in 2001 and then spun it out in 2026 (though Medtronic still owns roughly 90% of MiniMed shares, which will be relayed to its shareholders as a tax-free distribution in the foreseeable future). MiniMed is the leader in traditional, tubed insulin pumps and also offers continuous glucose monitors, smart insulin pens, and other consumables.
